Every so often an idea hits me that can best be expressed in short story form. It might stem from a particular character I’ve researched, a historical event, or even something taken from my own life that sticks in my head. For example, I based “The Sound of Silence,” which you can read below, on an “eclipse party” I attended a few years ago. Nothing so dramatic (or ridiculous) happened that day, but what if it had?
