At the turn of the twentieth century, San Francisco burst onto the world stage – a metropolis built with gold from California and the Klondike. Wealth and opportunity abounded, earning San Francisco one of its many nicknames – “The Golden City.” Having grown up nearby, it was a logical setting for my series. Happily, I discovered a ton of literary “gold” about that period, from the rise of modern art and architecture to the plight of immigrants and the incredible advances in medicine and technology. Throw in the natural disaster for which the city is famous, and you’ve got all the ingredients for the kind of page-turning historical fiction I like to write.
